Over the past few years, Google has produced its Pixel smartphones in Asian countries like China and Vietnam. Now Google is reportedly looking to shift around 10% to 20% of its Pixel smartphone production to India, the world’s second-largest smartphone market.
According to a report by The Information, Google may start producing around 500,000 to 1 million units of its Pixel smartphone devices in India. It further suggets that this could comprise 10-20% of Google’s annual Pixel shipments.

Google has given up on launching flagship versions of its smartphone series in India for the past three years, instead focusing on serving the customers with the mid-range a-lineup. However, if the smartphone is manufactured locally, Indians may see more Google Pixels there.
This is not the first time, Google plans to shift its Pixel smartphone production smartphone from China. Even though the company’s production has largely been dependent on China, it moved from the country in 2019 and produces Pixel 4A and Pixel 5 in another Asian country – Vietnam.
However, due to the Covid-19 impact in the country, Google produced its Pixel 6 series in China again. Now the US tech giant is looking to move to the Indian market.
The report further says that in China Covid-19 lockdowns still occurring, which delays obtaining components for some Pixel devices, therefore, the company wants to shift from China.
On the other hand, moving the production to India could also be a big boost to Google Pixel sales in the country. In India, a 20% import tax is charged on smartphones that are not even made in the country to make local production a potential economic deal.
The Pixel 6a was the first Google smartphone launched in India in almost three years but its price was well above the competing models in the segment.
