Google Lens adds video recording with voice context to enhance searches

Top 3 Key Points:

  1. New feature: Record videos and add voice context to Google Lens searches.
  2. Improved search accuracy with real-time video and audio inputs.
  3. Rolling out widely, ensure the latest Google app and Lens build for access.

In April 2022, Google introduced Multisearch support for Google Lens, which allowed users to add additional queries to refine search results. This feature became available worldwide by February 2023. However, the process felt a bit awkward as you could only add context after Lens had performed the search. Google is now making this smoother with a new “Speak now to ask about this image” feature.

When you use Google Lens now, the search icon will animate to catch your attention. Tapping it will reveal a “search with voice” option. Instead of just taking a picture and then searching, you can press and hold the search button to record a video and add voice context. The search results will then include the audio information you provided.

Mishaal Rahman, an Android expert, showed this feature in action on social media. In his video, he demonstrated how adding voice context improved the search results with Google Lens.

This video search feature started development in June and is now rolling out quickly. It is already available on many Android phones, suggesting it’s being released through a server-side update. If you don’t see it yet, make sure your Google app and Lens are updated to the latest version.

Over the past year, Google has added various innovative features to Android search, enhancing how users can add context. This update to Google Lens is a significant part of those improvements.

Google also recently introduced a grid view in Lens for easier access to past image searches and is reportedly working on new functionalities like Circle to Search for Google Lens.
