Apple is gearing up for a significant update to its AirPods lineup this fall, according to Mark Gurman’s latest Power On newsletter. The tech giant is expected to release two new versions of the AirPods 4, aiming to replace the existing AirPods 2 and AirPods 3 models.
Current AirPods Lineup
Apple has been selling the AirPods 2 since 2019, offering a budget-friendly option for users looking to enter the wireless headphone market. These earphones stick to the traditional AirPods design and are often available for less than $90. While they lack modern features, they still provide a basic wireless experience for iPhone users.
The AirPods 3, launched in October 2021, introduced several upgrades, including Spatial Audio, enhanced sound quality, a new force sensor on the stems, and Apple Watch charging capabilities. Despite these improvements, Apple continued to sell the AirPods 2 at a lower price, creating a clear distinction between the two models.
What to Expect from the New AirPods
The upcoming AirPods 4 are expected to simplify the lineup by replacing both the AirPods 2 and AirPods 3. There will be two versions: an entry-level model and a mid-tier model. The most notable difference between the two will be the inclusion of active noise cancellation in the mid-tier version, a feature absent in the entry-level model.
Both versions are likely to transition to USB-C charging ports, following Apple’s broader move towards this standard. While wireless charging is expected to be available on the mid-tier model, the entry-level AirPods 4 might not support it, continuing the trend Apple set with its previous AirPods generations.
Gurman hints that the new models could come with different branding to distinguish between the variants, though the exact names remain unclear. Apple may opt for names like “AirPods Lite” and “AirPods 4” to differentiate between the two.
With the launch expected as soon as next month, it won’t be long before we get a closer look at these new additions to Apple’s AirPods family.
