Top 3 Key Points:
- X (formerly Twitter) is testing a new video conferencing feature called X Conference.
- Meta is shutting down its Spark platform, affecting AR filters on Instagram and Facebook.
- Instagram and Spotify are working on a feature to share music in real time.
X (formerly Twitter) is working on a new video conferencing feature called X Conference. Currently in internal testing, it is similar to Zoom and Google Meet. According to X employee Chris Park, X Conference will include features like pinning speakers and enhanced notifications. App researcher Nima Owji also noted that it may offer spatial audio and built-in captions. However, the target audience for this feature outside of X’s own employees remains unclear.
First ever 𝕏 Conference meeting with some of my great @X and @XDevelopers teammates.
Already a really strong alternative to Google Hangouts, Zoom, AWS Chime, and certainly… Microsoft Teams 🤠

X already supports one-on-one video calls and public broadcasts through Spaces but has faced technical issues during major events. This raises questions about how well X Conference will perform. Historically, X has explored features aimed at business users, including a job search tool and potential LinkedIn-like features. The success of X Conference will depend on overcoming technical challenges and finding a broader audience.
In other news, Meta announced it will shut down its Spark platform on January 14, 2025. Spark allowed users to create AR filters for Instagram and Facebook. Meta stated this decision is part of its effort to focus on future consumer needs. After Spark is discontinued, only Meta-created AR filters will be available.
Meanwhile, Instagram and Spotify are collaborating on a new feature that will let users share the music they’re listening to in real-time. This feature will link Instagram accounts with Spotify, automatically updating a note with the current song. Although this feature is not yet available, it is expected to be announced soon. Currently, Instagram users can share songs manually, but this new integration will streamline the process. Unfortunately, Apple Music users are not included in this update for now.
