Apple has introduced a refreshed 24-inch iMac powered by the new M4 chip, marking a significant performance boost over the previous M3 version. Launched alongside USB-C versions of the Magic Mouse, Magic Keyboard, and Magic Trackpad, this update brings more power, new features, and modern design options to Apple’s all-in-one desktop.
M4 Chip Brings Improved Speed and Power
The M4 chip in the new iMac, previously launched in the iPad Pro, boasts up to a 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU. According to Apple, this advancement enables the iMac to perform everyday tasks 1.7 times faster and handle more intensive applications, like photo editing and gaming, up to 2.1 times faster compared to the M1-based iMac. The M4’s 16-core Neural Engine further accelerates machine-learning tasks, enhancing the device’s speed and responsiveness for advanced AI-driven applications.
The upgraded iMac now starts with 16GB of RAM—double the previous base model’s memory—and users can customize it with up to 32GB of RAM and 2TB of SSD storage. This change hints that future Macs may also start with a 16GB RAM minimum, setting a new performance standard.
Upgraded Camera and Nano-Texture Display Option
Apple has improved the iMac’s camera, equipping it with a 12-megapixel front-facing camera that features Center Stage, a tool that keeps the user centered during video calls. Additionally, the iMac offers a Desk View feature, which provides a simultaneous view of the user’s face and an overhead look at their workspace—ideal for presentations or interactive calls.
For those needing a premium display experience, Apple now offers a nano-texture display option for the iMac. This coating diffuses light more effectively, reducing glare and providing a sharper, clearer visual experience, which was previously only available on Intel-based models.
New Colors and Enhanced Connectivity
While the overall design remains the same, Apple has introduced new colors: green, yellow, orange, pink, purple, blue, and the classic silver. Higher-end iMac configurations featuring the 10-core M4 chip now support Thunderbolt 4 across all four rear USB-C ports, delivering faster data transfer and greater compatibility. Base models with the 8-core M4 chip come with two Thunderbolt 4 ports.
Updated Magic Accessories with USB-C Ports
Apple also announced new versions of its Magic accessories, including the Magic Mouse, Magic Keyboard, and Magic Trackpad, which now feature USB-C charging ports instead of Lightning. This update allows users to use a single cable to charge all devices, aligning with Apple’s recent shift toward USB-C across its product lineup. The Magic Mouse and Magic Keyboard come standard with the iMac, while the Magic Trackpad is an optional addition.
Despite the addition of USB-C, the Magic Mouse’s charging port remains on the underside, requiring users to turn the mouse over to charge it. The updated Magic accessories are available in two color options, white and black, and can be purchased separately. Notably, Apple has discontinued most Lightning-based Magic accessories, although a version of the Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad and Lightning charging is still available.
Pricing and Availability
Pre-orders for the new M4 iMac start today, with availability beginning on November 8. In the U.S., the iMac starts at $1,299.
Apple’s latest iMac and Magic accessory updates cater to users looking for a seamless, powerful desktop experience. With a new chip, expanded memory, enhanced visuals, and universal USB-C connectivity, Apple continues to deliver high-performance technology in a sleek, user-friendly package.
