OnePlus 9 phones will come with ColorOS 11 instead of HydrogenOS 11 in China

There has been news from the past couple of days that OnePlus is looking to change its OS and adopt Oppo’s ColorOS in China. The company will launch its new OnePlus 9 series on March 23 and according to the latest news, these new models will come with pre-installed ColorOS 11.

Previously, some of the leaked live images of the OnePlus 9 model have surfaced running Oppo’s ColorOS. And now the official announcement was made by the CEO Pete Lau on Weibo. He said that the new OnePlus phones will be coming with ColorOS 11 out of the box, while the previous models will still get support that are running on HydrogenOS.

OnePlus devices run on HydrogenOS in China which is based on Google’s Android operating system, while smartphones outside the country have OxygenOS installed. Though there is no difference in the user interface of both these operating systems and just they are called with different names.

ColorOS is the Android-based custom skin that comes pre-installed with the Oppo devices. At some time this UI was also installed on Realme smartphones. Realme then excluded the ColorOS from its devices and now OnePlus is adopting it for its smartphones.

While there are similarities in the OS of both these companies and the actual reason for this transition is still unknown. Meanwhile, the company is also planning to shut down the official website of HydrogenOS on coming March 24 which is the same time when the new OnePlus handsets will be announced.
