Microsoft announces DirectStorage SSD acceleration technology for Xbox Series X | S, arriving on PC in late 2021. During Game Stack Live 2021, it was confirmed that the solution will also work on older PCIe 3.0 NVMe drives, not just newer PCIe 4.0 devices.

On Xbox Series X Consoles | S similar technology is called the Xbox Velocity architecture and is made up of four pillars: dedicated SSD models, hardware data decompression, more efficient texture streaming, and the DirectStorage query library.

The last element will appear in an expanded and improved form on the PC, improving the connection between SSDs and video cards. But you will need memory plugged into the PCIe slot – Microsoft claims the standard SATA interface is too slow.

PCIe 3.0 support will increase the number of devices available as only Ryzen 3000, 5000, and Intel’s upcoming Rocket Lake platforms now support PCIe 4.0.

As for games, the solution should support all projects on DirectX 12, although DirectX 12 Ultimate will provide even better results. Of course, developers will have to make sure it works properly.
