Murata Manufacturing plans to start mass production of all-solid-state batteries in the coming months. These batteries, comparing favorably with modern counterparts in terms of safety and energy density, the Japanese company intends to supply to manufacturers of headphones and other wearable devices.

The manufacturing breakthrough was made possible by combining the lithium-ion battery technology acquired from Sony with the laminating technology developed for the production of multilayer ceramic capacitors, the main product of the Kyoto-based company. A solid-state battery production line will also be located in Japan.
“We will start producing [all-solid-state batteries] in small quantities in the first half of the fiscal year ending March 2022, and will expand production in the second half,” a source quoted one company executive as saying.
It is planned that over time the company will produce 100,000 batteries per month. The technology developed by Murata is not suitable for high-capacity batteries but works well for small batteries used in wearable devices.
Surface mount batteries simplify device design and cell layouts by eliminating the need for separate space and wiring.
