Google’s next Pixel phone will be launched this fall, which is very exciting. The leaked renderings of Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 “Pro” show that Google is taking bold new directions for design, display, and cameras. There are rumors that the new Pixel phone will be powered by Google’s own “GS101” silicon chip in the background.
XDAdevelopers have confirmed this through our own sources and disclosed this news inadvertently in AOSP. Thanks to another inadvertent disclosure, they have learned more about the chipset that will power the Pixel phones in 2021. Specifically, the Pixel 6 will be equipped with the same Mali GPU as the Exynos-powered Galaxy S21 sold by Samsung worldwide.

Since we first heard about Google’s custom silicon project code-named “Whitechapel”, it was hoped that it has the ready-made Mali GPU provided by ARM. In a comment on the Google issue tracker discovered by the skill expert @akes29, a Googler posted an ANGLE logcat taken on a “P21” device. The logger listed the renderer as Mali-G78 GPU, which is ARM’s second GPU IP based on the Valhall architecture.
As seen in Huawei’s Mate X2, Mali-G78 supports up to 24 cores, while Samsung’s global Galaxy S21 uses a 14-core variant. We don’t know how many cores the Mali-G78 GPU of Pixel 6 has, nor do we know the maximum frequency of these cores.
However, we at least now know that Google plans to use high-end mobile GPUs for its upcoming Pixels, which means it should be a significant improvement over the Adreno 620 GPU in the Pixel 5. Bad GPU performance is one of them. The most disappointing aspect of Google Pixel 5, but coupled with the new game mode of Android 12, the new Pixel 6 should provide a better experience for mobile gamers.
