LG Energy Solution, a battery company under LG, recently announced that it is about to complete the research and development of button-type lithium batteries, which can be used in true wireless Bluetooth headsets, such as Apple’s AirPods 3 and AirPods Pro 2. LG is currently building a trial production line for this battery.
It will complete trial production this year and start mass production in 2022. LG previously supplied cylindrical lithium batteries for Apple AirPods 1 and AirPods 2, which were placed in the headphone handle. According to data from Counterpoint, a market research organization, LG’s batteries account for 48% of truly wireless headsets.

Foreign media said that Samsung SDI took the lead in developing 85mAh and 60mAh button-type lithium batteries in 2020 for use in Samsung Galaxy Buds Bluetooth headsets. Apple’s AirPods Pro uses a special-shaped lithium battery from the German manufacturer Varta.
According to previous news, Apple’s AirPods 3 is expected to be officially released this year, using a short handle design similar to AirPods Pro, and will also be replaced with a button-type lithium battery. However, this product is too late to wait for LG’s new battery production. The AirPods Pro 2 that will be released in 2022 is expected to be able to use LG’s button-type lithium battery.
Apple AirPods 3 will not support active noise reduction, but it is expected to support transparent mode. The headset is expected to be priced at 159 US dollars, but it may also be priced at 199 US dollars (about 1269.62 yuan).
