Huawei’s research for 6G was started way back in 2009 while 6G research in 2017: Rotating Chairman

Xu Zhijun, Huawei’s rotating chairman, delivered a keynote speech entitled “Huawei Innovation Practice and Enlightenment” at the Pujiang Innovation Forum.

Xu Zhijun said that in 2013, he publicly proposed and shared Huawei’s vision for 5G at the Global Mobile Broadband Forum. At that time, he proposed: 5G should be realized, with a network capacity that is 1,000 times higher than 4G, and it must be able to connect 100 billion IoT devices. , Provide a user rate of 10Gbps, and extremely low latency. Looking at it today, these visions are gradually being realized.

According to reports, Huawei’s 5G research started in 2009. They decided to set up a communications technology laboratory in 2009 and started early 5G research. That year, the world’s first 4G commercial network was launched at the same time in Norway and Sweden at the end of the year, and China’s 4G license has not yet been issued (China’s 4G license was only issued in December 2013).

Xu Zhijun pointed out that after a period of research, in 2013, Huawei decided to further increase its investment in 5G research and announced a plan to invest at least US$600 million in 5G research and innovation in the next five years. Including product investment.

By 2019, the world’s first 5G commercial network was opened, and after a 10-year journey, 5G innovation is a process of accumulation. “Looking back now, the funding needs for research are not as large as imagined. In fact, the planned 600 million US dollars investment was not used up in the end.

Moreover, I found that the earlier the investment, the lower the cumulative investment. In fact, in 2017, That is, two years before the commercialization of 5G, we started 6G research.”
