Huawei has filed trademarks application to add new watches to its existing GT lineup. With this step, the company suggests we’ll have more amazing smartwatches in the future.
According to LetsGoDigital, Huawei Technologies have applied trademarks of Watch GT3, GT5, GT8, and GT10 in the UK Intellectual Property Office (UK IPO) on 27th September 2021. The applied name comes under classes 9, 14, and 35 categorized as watches and wearables.
Well, that’s not all, this is another interesting story with Sony-
In 2015, Huawei applied for Watch GT 3 and GT 5 trademarks in European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). Before it got the approval of intellectuals, Sony- the Japanese Electronic enterprise iteratively opposed the Chinese firm claiming for the name in 2016 and in 2019.
In the meantime, the Huawei Watch GT and GT 2 were already debuted in the markets. Furthermore, this lineup made a great contribution to the company’s earnings from the wearable market. Now, the question is why Sony filed lawsuits and is arguing with Huawei for the name GT.
Reason:
As per the collected data, Sony owns a famous racing game series “Gran Turismo”, which can stand for GT. However, there isn’t any trademark right for the so-called abbreviation.
Besides Huawei, understands that the ‘GT’ label cannot just be demanded by Sony. Moreover, the European office hasn’t reached any conclusion yet. But, the GT series is undoubtedly gaining fame among users.
Will Huawei Continue its GT Series:
At present, all applications are under review process so it’s better that we don’t conclude here. In addition, Huawei won’t give up on its GT label that easily.
However, the notable point is, the new trademark applications are filled in UK IPO while the dispute is being heard by EUIPO – which are two independents offices now.
