It looks like AT&T already has a response to the new FCC proposals that were recently announced, as they add a one-time passcode security feature to reduce port theft scams.
As per the info, the AT&T support article states that carriers will soon need customers who want to issue their number to produce a one-time passcode before changing carriers.
The feature is called the “Number Transfer PIN”, and Verizon has been using it since March last year. Only a secure one-time use code can only be made by the customer.
Customers who want to port out should first dial *PORT to their current line or generate code through their myAT&T/online account app. The code is then provided to the carriers who move to it, along with other general account details.
Basically, AT&T employees are unable to generate this code on behalf of the customer. This removes the state of “internal work” status, at least the exit scams.
The number transfer PIN replaces the PIN setup that AT&T and T-Mobile settings are currently in use. The pre-configured PIN is established when the account is opened and is used for account access and withdrawal. New PINs are randomly generated and reproduced only when needed, making them very secure.
The change will now take place on October 18. T-Mobile will then be the only major network that does not use the Number Transfer PIN method.
