The latest LinkedIn job listing shows that Microsoft wants to hire a Director for SoC Architecture. One will be responsible for working on a special chip for Surface devices. According to Phone Arena (via HotHardware), news recently broke that Microsoft and AMD are working together to create a laptop processor.
Depending on the performance of the graphics, this processor can outperform Qualcomm processors. The Microsoft and AMD integrated chipset is likely to include the Cortex-X1 core and mRDNA 2 GPU. In addition, an Exynos 5G connection modem will also be installed.
The coincidence of these two issues leads us to the conclusion that Microsoft, with its new ad, is looking for someone to take responsibility for building new chips for Surface devices. The new chipset will use a 5nm construction.

The Microsoft Surface duo 2 is the latest Surface device by the company that uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 5G chipset. The GPU is Adreno 660. The phone will be available for purchase on October 21. Additionally, the Price starts at $1,499.
Drawing Qualcomm Snapdragon chips for the flagship will not be an easy process for Microsoft, and it requires a high level of engineering to ensure the performance of Surface devices. However, a partnership between Microsoft and AMD could be a secure solution.
Microsoft looking for an in-house chip for Surface Devices
This is not Microsoft’s first attempt to build an internal chip for its devices. The company has partnered with Qualcomm to create the Microsoft SQ1 chip for Surface Pro X in 2019.
Also, Microsoft has been seeking to hire specific engineers from Intel, Nvidia, AMD, and Qualcomm. Back in December 2020, Bloomberg reported that Microsoft wanted to design computer chips for servers and Surface devices.
Relying on in-house chipsets for devices will allow companies to have more control over performance and construction costs. Apple has been following this process for a long time, and other smartphone manufacturers such as Samsung and Huawei have been doing the same for years. Similarly, Google also wants to launch its Pixel 6 series and in-house Tensor processing unit. Therefore, Microsoft does not wish to lag behind.
