Sony smartphones market revenue raised by 25% year-on-year: Report

Sony’s latest earnings report for the second quarter of 2021 the first three months ending on September 30 has been released. Its balance sheet shows that Sony’s mobile communications division including smartphones and Internet-related Service business operating income increased significantly during the quarter.

Sony’s mobile communications division made a profit of 99.1 billion yen approximately RMB 5.57 billion in the second quarter of this year, compared with a profit of 79.1 billion yen approximately RMB 4.44 billion)in the second quarter of this year.

Moreover, revenue in the second quarter of 2021 is an increase of 25% compared to the same quarter last year. Sony said the growth of the mobile communications sector is due to the “increase in unit sales of the product”.

At the same time, the financial report also stated that Sony’s music and film and television divisions have also increased profits. Interim profits for the music division have increased from 402.2 billion yen (approximately RMB 22.62 billion) in the second quarter of 2020 to this year.

Furthermore, 520.8 billion yen (approximately RMB 29.29 billion) in the second quarter, an overall increase of 29.4%. Sony’s film and television division grew from 360.6 billion yen (approximately RMB 20.28 billion) in 2020 to 464.9 billion yen (approximately RMB 26.14 billion) in the same quarter of 2021, a year-on-year increase of 28.9%.

In the past few years, Sony’s smartphone strategy has changed, and Sony’s mobile business has already become profitable at the end of 2020. With the recent launch of the newly released “professional consumer-grade” mobile phone Xperia Pro-I and the good news of the mobile sector’s financial report in the second quarter of this year, it represents Sony’s continued development in the smartphone industry.
