According to Strategy Analytics, the smartphone image sensor market is expected to grow by more than 3% year-on-year in 2021. Where Sony Semiconductor Solutions topped the list with a 45% revenue share, followed by Samsung Systems LSI and OmniVision in 2021.

Moreover, the first three vendors were seized with a revenue share of nearly 83% of the global smartphone image sensor market by 2021. In terms of smartphone multi-camera applications, image sensors for depth and macro applications account for 30 percent, while ultrawide applications account for more than 15 percent.

However, smartphone OEMs continue to follow high-resolution CIS in multi-camera applications as well as in device tires. Sony has expanded its supply of custom CIS products to flagship premium smartphones, while Samsung and OmniVision have seen demand for high-resolution CIS products.

Additionally, it has been noticed that image sensor vendors are introducing new CIS products with high-resolution specifications for smartphone ultraviolet camera applications.

Large format and high-resolution image sensors are a key area in development as OEMs aim to implement better camera capabilities on smartphones. However, demand is being impacted by CIS inventory and supply limits for smartphone components.
