Google is working on Snore and Cough detection features for Android phones

Google keeps on working to add new features to its existing devices. Back in 2021, Google released an update for its Fit app, which has the capability to turn Android phones into heart and respiratory monitors. These monitoring features can come into effect by using the phone’s camera, microphones, and accelerometer.

Now, Google is working on new features and is currently in process of testing on-device snore and cough detection for Android phones. Recently,  the source has decompiled the latest version of the application, which Google uploaded to the Play Store because these codes contain hints at possible future features.

Version 2.0 of Google Health Studies will support the launch of a new digital wellbeing study.  Further, Google explains that the “Health Sensing team is actively working to bring an advanced suite of sensing capabilities and algorithms to Android devices with the goal of providing users with meaningful insight into their sleep.” This audio collection “supports this mission by providing data necessary to validate, tune, and develop such algorithms.”

Google snore and cough detection

The new cough and snore algorithms will translate into a “bedside monitoring” feature on Android devices. It works in a “privacy-preserving, on-device” manner for “nocturnal cough and snore monitoring.”  However, the nocturnal cough and snore monitoring” may use the phone’s microphone to record snoring and coughing events during the sleep.

At the moment, it is not known whether Google snore and cough detection will be a broader Android feature or a Pixel exclusive. More information is yet to come, until then stay tuned with us!
