Wafer manufacturing capacity may be surplus in 2023-2024: Report

MIC estimates that the supply and demand of chips will stabilize in 2023, and the wafer manufacturing capacity may be oversupplied from 2023 to 2024. According to the Taiwan media “Central News Agency”, Lin Boqi, the MIC industry consultant and director of the Information Policy Association, believes that the major wafer foundries in Taiwan, China invested in capacity expansion last year, but it is expected that by 2023 to 2024.

A large amount of wafer manufacturing capacity will emerge. It is expected to stabilize the supply and demand of semiconductors, but under the current decline in terminal demand, there is also the concern of oversupply, and the pace of subsequent production capacity construction must be carefully planned.

Regarding the issue of foundry prices, Lin Boqi pointed out that the foundry prices in Taiwan, and China remained high, and fabs continued to expand production lines and increase prices. Taking TSMC as an example, the growth rate of advanced processes below 16 nanometers in the first half of the year was 8% to 10%, and the mature process above 28nm will increase by 25%.
