Facebook is planning to shut down the SMS support for its Messenger app by the next month. The company has recently cited in its official support article that users will no longer be able to use Messenger to send and receive SMS after September 28, 2023.
Going into flashbacks, Facebook Messenger gained SMS support for Android in 2016. Thereafter, it enabled users to communicate with their friends and family members easily, without searching for an alternative application. However, this facility will reach an end by the next month.

Note that Meta says, users would still be able to send and receive messages through the cellular network and access the message history through their phone’s new default messaging app. One can switch to it by opening the system Settings app > Apps > Default apps > SMS app and picking another client.
