Google Messages app getting a new ‘Spotlights’ feature instead of Assistant

Posted on

Months back, Google removed its Assistant feature from the Messages app and now the company is planning to bring a new Spotlight feature. Google offers a variety of applications that lets users customize various functionalities along with several interesting features.

The Assistant feature in the Google Messages app offers contextual suggestions for restaurants, movies, and more based on your current conversation, which can now be performed by the Spotlight feature. Users are able to launch the Assistant feature with just a single tap on the suggestion chip or on the plus icon.

Additionally,  the attached Plus button has also been used to enable Google Assistant in the past, but that is no longer the case. Now all these inline conversation suggestions and the trio of Assistant buttons have been removed, and it can now be replaced with Spotlight.

This was all about the Assistant feature, and now if we talk about the Spotlights feature, it’s a redesigned menu that removes the example carousels for just descriptions. The “Spotlights” feature could offer instant info & convenient actions from Google Apps, using your location, just like Assistant.

Following the changes, we found that this new feature of Messages will highlight and underline places in chats and let you tap to see more information from Google Search and Maps app. This pop-up will let you quickly get directions, call, see the menu, view the ratings, and order food directly.

As of now, the company has not revealed any other capabilities of this new feature, nor its availability. But we can expect that there could be more optimizations in the Messages app, once the Spotlight feature is officially added.
