Google Pay India brings tap and pay support for more banks
India’s Google Pay (Formerly Tez) has quickly become popular and has almost become synonymous with the Unified Payment Interface (UPI)-the platform is based on this platform.
In September last year, the company announced plans to expand the range of UPI payments to support tokenized cards, but it did not materialize even a few months after the initial trailer was released. It seems that Google Pay India has finally added credit and debit cards as supported payment methods, although it is not yet available to everyone.
Several Google Pay support pages have recently been added to help people use the new card payment options. Currently, only Axis Bank credit/debit cards and SBI credit cards are supported.

Setting up the card for the first time requires you to go through a quick verification process, which includes punching in the OTP received from your bank. After registering, you can start to use your mobile phone to tap and pay on the NFC-enabled terminal, scan the Bharat QR code or make online payments where Google Pay is accepted.
Google has noticed that your sensitive card details will be tokenized to avoid sharing your actual information during the transaction. These identifiers will be stored locally, which means that you must set up the card every time you reset your phone or buy a new phone, which is a small fee for maintaining the privacy and security of your bank account.
Some users started to see the option to add a card a month ago, and our reminder received it in the last day or two, indicating that it is still in progress. So far, only some users can use this feature (maybe as part of the server-side switch), so getting the latest APK does not guarantee any changes. It is not clear whether Google is testing it before testing a broader version, or whether it is already slowly rolling out.
With the help of the UPI platform, Google Pay has achieved great success in India. However, if it wants to replicate successfully in the card field, it must take advantage of the vast user base of US debit cards and quickly attract large banks to join—Samsung Pay can do this from the beginning.
After a limited launch last year, Google Pay India quickly expanded to cover Visa cards of several well-known banks in India, and only increased thereafter. The popular UPI app now adds support for IndusInd credit and debit cards, bringing the total to six banks. The following is a list of all Indian banks supported by the app:
- Axis Credit & Debit cards
- SBI Credit & Debit cards
- Kotak Credit & Debit cards
- HSBC Credit card
- HDFC Credit & Debit cards
- IndusInd Credit & Debit cards
The activation process has not been changed. You can follow the steps above to start using the bank cards supported by these banks. As before, you can only associate a Visa card with GPay, and this feature is not yet available for Mastercard or RuPay users.
