If disappearing messages are turned on, media sent in the chat will disappear but will be saved on the phone if auto-download is on. You can turn auto-download off in WhatsApp Settings > Data and Storage Usage.
WhatsApp recommends using it carefully because the recipient has the choice to forward the message or save this before disappear it.
The FAQ page is now live on the WhatsApp website, the feature is likely to start rolling out to users sometime in the coming weeks. This feature will be available to users on Android, iOS, KaiOS, and the Web.
