iPhones can now be used as a built-in phone security key for Google apps

Posted on

With the update to the Google Smart Lock app on iOS, you can now set up your phone’s built-in security key, the best second-factor protection for your Google Account. Google also refreshed the app’s design to make it easier to use with version 1.6.

How it’s going to work?

Anytime when you enter a username and password for Google Account on your iPhone, you will be prompted to open Smart Lock on the nearby device to confirm a sign-in. You can also cancel it, you will see the option “No, it’s not me.”

For this operation, the Bluetooth must be On because it will be used to communicate the confirmation request and verification on the computer and iPhone. It will only work when signing-in to Google with Chrome.

How to setup?

First, you need to install the “Google Smart Lock” application on your device, you will be prompted to select an account to “Set up your phone’s built-in security key.”

The old version of this app was just used for allowing Bluetooth security keys, as well as generating one-time security codes.

Note: The iPhone security key needs to be within Bluetooth range to the device that wants to log-in.
