WhatsApp to ask ID verification before making payment

Posted on

It has been reported that WhatsApp is planning to bring new stickers to promote its payment service. Now going by the new information, WhatsApp will soon ask users to verify their identity in order to pay on the platform.

Recently, new strings seen in the latest release of WhatsApp beta suggest that the messenger will require users to download confirmation documents in order to continue using payments on WhatsApp.

Currently, when you set up WhatsApp Pay in India, the service only verifies the phone number associated with your bank account to enable UPI-based transactions.

In Brazil, Messenger uses Facebook Pay to verify credit or debit cards to make payments easier for users. At present, the app does not require users to submit any authentication documents to make payments.

The latest WhatsApp v2.21.22.6 beta (via XDA) includes some new strings that suggest users may need to submit ID verification documents in order to continue using Payments. Although it is not certain why WhatsApp would require users to verify their identity in order to make payments.

WhatsApp may request ID verification in order to make payments:

Some UPI-based applications, such as Google Pay and PhonePe, do not require users to submit any transfer or refund documents. However, wallet applications such as PayTM request KYC verification in accordance with RBI guidelines. This leads us to believe that WhatsApp may be working for the WhatsApp Pay wallet, which will require users to submit ID documents.

WhatsApp is yet to issue an official announcement about this change. As new cables have recently entered the beta version, it may be some time before the company discloses any details.
