Apple and Samsung were the top semiconductor buyers in 2020: Report

Posted on

Samsung is the largest memory chip maker in the world and becomes the second-largest chip buyer worldwide. Following the growing demand for telecommunications during the COVID-19 epidemic, Apple and Samsung continue to be the largest buyer of semiconductor chips in the world by 2020.

According to global research and Gartner, Apple spent $53.6 billion on chips, up from 24 percent year-over-year, considering for 11.9 percent of the global market. And next is South Korea’s Samsung Electronics who spent $36.4 billion, up 20.4 percent year-over-year.

“Two major factors impacted the top OEMs’ semiconductor spending in 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic and the political conflict between the US and China,” said Masatsune Yamaji, research director at Gartner.

“The pandemic weakened the demand for 5G smartphones and disrupted vehicle production, but drove the demand for mobile PCs and video games, as well as the investment in cloud data centers through 2020. Furthermore, a rise in memory prices in 2020 resulted in increased OEM chip spending through the year,” Yamaji said.

The continued success of AirPods, particularly demand for Mac PC and iPods, including the use of NondFlash are driving up Apple’s chip demand. However, for the Chinese company, weak competition from Huawei due to US trade restrictions is a positive factor for Samsung.

Samsung has benefited from the COVID-19 trends that work from home and e-learning, increasing the demand for PCs and cloud servers, which use many solid-state drives from Samsung,

Among the top 10 companies, Xiaomi recorded a sharp growth of 26 percent year-on-year due to online sales and the Huawei blockade.
