Global semiconductors shortage may affect Nintendo’s Switch consoles business

Posted on

The big “N” reported a growing “sense of insecurity” about how many consoles she could produce. Nintendo recently reported that it has sold 85 million Switch consoles worldwide.

The company shipped 28.83 million devices at the end of fiscal 2021 and intends to ship another 25.5 million by March 31, 2022. If everything works out the way Nintendo hopes, the Switch will surpass the Wii in sales and become the best-selling gaming system in Big N’s history. However, there is one but.

During a press conference with investors, Nintendo announced that the global semiconductor shortage has affected it as well. The company cannot manufacture the Switch in the quantities it wants and is experiencing an ever-growing sense of uncertainty about how much it will be able to produce hybrid consoles in the future.

Nintendo also stated that consolidated net income for the fiscal year ended March 2021 increased 86% to 480.3 billion yen, a record high for the first time in 12 years. The number of sales of the main game machine “Nintendo Switch” was 28.83 million units, which was the largest among the machines.

Sales of 25.5 million units are expected to decrease by 12% next fiscal year, but President Shuntaro Furukawa is confident that “there is no recognition that the (sales) peak has passed.” The main exchanges at the press conference are as follows.
