Samsung Electronics recently announced that it has supplied Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS) technology to Verizon‘s communications network, the largest mobile communication service provider in the United States.
Verizon launched a 5G national network service using DSS technology last October. It was set at the time when Apple released the first 5G smartphone, the iPhone 12.
At the time, two European telecommunication equipment companies, such as Ericsson in Sweden and Nokia in Finland, provided DSS technology. Verizon’s 5G national network coverage population was about 200 million people.
Samsung Electronics’ Network Division supplied Verizon with DSS technology two months later than Ericsson and Nokia. Verizon announced last month that it added 24 million people to its 5G national network coverage population.
Among Verizon’s 5G coverage population of 230 million, Samsung Electronics’ telecommunications equipment covers 10% of the population. Regions include Central Texas, Tulsa, Oklahoma, Upstate New York, New England.
Samsung Electronics’ Network Division supplied Verizon DSS technology using vRAN 2.0, a virtual network structure. Virtualization refers to a software technology that enables a general-purpose server to be used as a wireless network device.
vRAN 2.0 is a technology that virtualizes even distributed units (DUs). In vRAN 2.0, network signal flow is connected from a radio unit (RU) to a centralized unit (CU) through a DU, and vDU and vCU are virtualized in both the DU and the CU.

Although Samsung Electronics’ network division has built virtual vCUs on 5G networks such as domestic mobile communication service companies and KDDI in Japan, Verizon is the first to supply vRAN 2.0 virtualized to DU. The network type in which the only CU is virtualized is called vRAN 1.0.
Samsung Electronics, which has a market share of less than 10% in Verizon, is expected to start supplying 4G and 5G equipment this year. The industry sees that it will bring a significant portion of Nokia’s share. Last year, Samsung Electronics signed a multi-year contract with Verizon to supply 7.7 trillion won ($6.64 billion) worth of communication equipment.
