SK Hynix will mass-produce the massive 18GB LPDDR5 mobile DRAM

On March 8, SK Hynix announced that it will mass-produce 18 gigabytes (GB) LPDDR5 mobile DRAM, the largest capacity in the industry. As it was installed on the gaming smartphone ROG (Republic of Gamers) 5 which Taiwan Asus is scheduled to release, mass production began in earnest.

According to a recent report, the latest product operates at a speed of 6400Mb/s, which is about 20% faster than the mobile DRAM (LPDDR5, 5500Mb/s) installed in existing smartphones and 6400Mb/s is a speed that can process 10 FHD (Full-HD)-class movies (5GB) in 1 second.

SK Hynix predicted that the mass production of this product will enhance smartphone performance. It was expected to support the optimal environment for playing high-resolution games and videos.

In the future, it is expected that the application range will continue to expand with the latest technologies such as ultra-high performance camera apps and artificial intelligence (AI).

An official from SK Hynix said, “As the capacity is larger than the 16GB product, the temporary storage space for data will expand, which will greatly improve processing speed and image quality.

According to market researcher Omdia, the demand for LPDDR5 DRAM currently accounts for about 10 percent of the entire mobile DRAM market, but the share is estimated to increase to more than 50 percent by 2023.

SK Hynix was the world’s second-largest DRAM producer in the fourth quarter of 2020 with a market share of 29.5 percent after racking up $5.2 billion in revenue. The company was only behind its South Korean rival Samsung that boasted a 42.1 percent share in the DRAM market.
