Once you have decided how much it will cost for the cheapest gaming monitor, you must first determine the size and screen resolution. Larger is not always good – it has a lot to do with how close you are to your ideal display size and for most desktop PC setups, the standard 24 to 27 inches is good.
Displays in this size range are also compatible with 1080p, though at 27 inches if your GPU can support it, you might want to consider bumping it up to 1440p. At 32 inches and above, you’ll want to stick to the 1440p and 4K gaming monitors, too, depending on the vertical resolution of the display in terms of the ultraviolet panel. The ultraviolet display, similar to a 24-inch monitor, still looks great at 1080p.
An important feature is that any good gaming monitor has a kind of vertical synchronization technology, AMD FreeSync for use with Nvidia G-Sync for two prevailing standards radian graphics cards and GeForce GPUs. Reducing screen tearing (if not deleting) Vertical synchronization during fast-moving scenes ensures a smooth image, which is an annoying problem where the lines that make up the image are not synchronized vertically.
It is generally recommended to get a gaming monitor that fits with your graphics card, although Nvidia has recently been increasingly cross-compatible with freezing monitors. Note that you need a DisplayPort cable to take advantage of G-Sync; Works with FreeSync HDMI or DisplayPort.
The third thing to look for in a cheap gaming monitor is a refresh rate of 120Hz or higher. The general rule is that the refresh rate of your display should be at least twice that per second you want to play (for example 60 fps 120 Hz or higher for gaming). Modern HDMI and DisplayPort connections support higher refresh rates, although some older standards, such as HDMI 1.4, may not.
You will see many displays that are sold as “gaming monitors” with only 60Hz or 75Hz refresh rates. Although these units have Free Sync or G-Sync, they are not ideal for gaming at 60 fps, which is the minimum we recommend for PC gaming in 2020. The last thing to note is the curved and ultraviolet display, both of which have become very popular recently. There’s nothing to fear from a curved gaming monitor, but unless you’re over 27 inches (more specifically, if you’re buying an ultraviolet panel), do not pay extra for this feature – you will not notice it sitting at a normal distance from a standard-sized desktop display.
