AMD canceled project of K12 ARM CPU: Jim Keller

According to the latest report, legendary chip architect Jim Keller said at a conference that his K12 ARM CPU project was “foolishly canceled” after he left his former employer AMD.

The “Future of Computing” conference was reportedly hosted by the Department of Computer Science and Automation at the Indian Institute of Science, where Jim Keller gave a brief overview of the various projects he had worked on and the basics of chip design.

Jim Keller said that when he was at AMD, he worked on Zen 1 development and had plans for Zen 2 and Zen 3. As shown in the picture above, AMD has announced the K12 ARM CPU project on the PPT. This series of processors were originally scheduled to be launched in 2017, targeting the dense server and embedded market segments.

According to Jim Keller, the K12 ARM CPU project was actually canceled by some product managers after he left AMD. He said that most product managers are afraid to change things, but because he is an architect himself, he is not afraid of such changes, and the work he did during his time at AMD was “interesting.”

After leaving AMD, Jim Keller joined Intel in 2018 and then left in 2020. He is currently working at the chip company Tenstorrent.
