Apple may bring lossless streaming to AirPods via software update

Apple is developing a dedicated lossless audio format that will allow Apple AirPods to play this lossless audio. At present, Apple AirPods, AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max all use Bluetooth to transmit the lossy AAC format to play audio, and cannot transmit and play lossless ALAC and FLAC audio files.

Technically speaking, it is impossible to play true lossless audio files with the AAC Bluetooth connection technology that Apple is using. In addition, AirPods Max’s USB to Lightning data cable also limits its playback of lossless audio.

In addition, because Apple headsets have no built-in Wi-Fi function, and cannot be added through a firmware update, that is unless the protocol is changed, Apple’s AirPlay 2 function cannot be used for AirPods.

In this way, if Apple wants AirPods to support the playback of lossless audio, it must simultaneously launch its own lossless audio format when launching the Bluetooth 5.0 protocol. According to a report from AppleTrack, Apple is likely to announce the launch of its own proprietary lossless audio format at the WWDC conference in June.

The tipster Jon Prosser also said that Apple may adopt the same strategy it used to promote AirTag and “Find” apps-first introduce a third-party compatible lossless audio format for AirPods, and then release its own proprietary lossless audio format.

Apple announced a number of new features to be launched by Apple Music through a press release earlier, including not only lossless audio and spatial audio, but also Dolby Atmos. These new features will arrive in June with the updates of iOS 14.6, iPadOS 14.6, tvOS 14.6, and macOS 11.4.
