Apple TV 2021 supports 4K at 120fps but it has not been enabled yet

Apple TV box will start shipping in May. So far, some users have received the product and disassembled it. The new product has a 4K 60FPS video output capability, a built-in Apple A12 chip, and an active cooling fan.

Some overseas reviewers said that the video output interface of the new Apple TV is HDMI 2.1 specification, which theoretically supports 4K 120FPS HDR screen output, but Apple has not yet unlocked this feature.

The evaluation from Screentime’s pointed out that when using the tvOS 14.6.1 system, the HDMI interface of this product uses the traditional TDMS (Transition-Minimised Differential Signalling) minimum differential conversion signal for output instead of the latest FRL (Fixed Rate Link) method.

The latter can be transmitted with four data channels, each with 12Gbps. If the second method is adopted, the total bandwidth can reach 48Gbps, and it can output 8K, 10K resolution pictures, or 4K/120FPS specifications. In addition, the color signal of TDMS is 4:2:2, which is not the highest specification 4:4:4.

Google YouTube currently supports 4K 60FPS video playback on Apple TV 2021. In addition, the new version of the product also supports Siri Remote voice control, equipped with a sturdy metal remote control. Foreign media said that Apple is expected to announce the new features of Apple TV at the WWDC 2021 event held on June 7, which is expected to unlock the 4K 120FPS video output.
