According to the latest report from Bloomberg, Apple’s high-end AirPods Pro true wireless earbuds may be updated in 2022, allowing them to track your exercise.
The report also repeated the previous statement that Apple is preparing a new set of entry-level AirPods for later in 2021, which will borrow their design from the current AirPods Pro. Bloomberg quoted “people who know this” as saying that the next generation of AirPods Pro will include updated motion sensors, with a focus on fitness tracking.
For Apple, adding fitness tracking to AirPods Pro will be a logical move. The company has a long history of fitness-centric functions, which can be traced back to 2006 when it launched the Nike + partnership. Small sensors are seen in Nike+ running shoes, which can send activity data back to iPod nano or iPhone.

Since then, Apple has greatly expanded its fitness products with the Apple Watch, which has a large number of sensors for tracking steps, heart rate, and even blood oxygen levels. These fitness features finally led to the Apple Fitness+ subscription service, which allows people to follow expert-guided exercise routines on any iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV under the tracking provided by Apple Watch.
But Apple Watch is still a fairly expensive device, and not everyone who wants to take advantage of Apple Fitness+ wants to have Apple’s smartwatch. Embedding additional sensors in AirPods Pro can eliminate the need for Apple Watch, or make the existing Apple Watch more accurate by merging two data sources.
Embedding fitness sensors into earplugs is nothing new. Jabra’s Elite Sport true wireless earbuds debuted in 2017, with a built-in heart rate monitor. Samsung and Bose have both released earbuds with similar technology in the past. Recently, Amazon added basic activity tracking to its second-generation Amazon Echo Buds.
However, what does not matter how people process the data captured by these sensors is the sensor. This is where Apple has a clear advantage. Whether you use the Fitness app built into iOS or use it with the subscription-based Apple Fitness+ service, Apple has developed a complete set of software and services that enable fitness fans to see their overall health immersively Status and progress towards achieving personal goals.
