According to the latest info, Google’s apps for messaging and video calling, Google Meat, and Google Chat will soon be installed by default on Chrome OS devices.

In an age of social distance, video calling apps like Zoom and Google Meet are more important than ever. At the same time, Google began switching from Hangouts to Google Chat, opening an app for the Google Workspace subscription without paying.

With a new bug reported for “pre-installed Meat and Chat PWAs in Chrome OS”, it looks like Google wants to make these apps more accessible to Chromebook owners. While Google Meeting and Google Chat offer Android apps that can be easily installed on most Chromebooks, Google chooses to install a web app on Chrome OS to help prevent storage bloating.

Work has begun for these new default apps, as two new flags are being added to Chrome: // flags, one for chat and the other for Meet. He said it was not clear how anyone would change that flag before they installed their Chromebook.

Once the change takes effect, both newly purchased Chromebooks and factory reset Chrome OS devices – or “Powerwash” will be available by default. As with most Chrome OS default apps, you can easily uninstall them to clear your app list.

The bug is currently being tagged for Chrome OS version 92, which is set to be released in late July. If things are on track, newer devices starting with Chrome OS 92 and any Chromebook reset should meet as a chat and by default after the update.
