Apple planning to use Qualcomm’s 5G modems in its future products

Apple and Qualcomm, entered into an agreement in 2019, ending a long legal battle between the companies. This made Apple to use Qualcomm’s 5G modem for iPhone 12 lineup.

Apple used Snapdragon’s X55 modems in its iPhone 12 models, as shown in a teardown video. And now it seems that the company will be using Qualcomm modems in its future devices.

Danny Walsh on his Twitter revealed page 71 of an Apple-Qualcomm settlement filling which shows that Apple could launch new products with Snapdragon’s X60 modem between June 1, 2020, and May 31, 2022. Apple will also be using X65 and X70 modems which are yet to be announced by Qualcomm in the products launched between June 1, 2022, and May 31, 2024.

This statement is from the settlement document:

Apple intends to commercially launch (i) New Models of Apple Products during the time period between June 1, 2020 and May 31, 2021 (the “2020 Launch”), some of which use the SDX55 Qualcomm Chipset, (ii) New Models of Apple Products during the time period between June 1, 2021 and May 31, 2022 (the “2021 Launch”), some of which use the SDX60 Qualcomm Chipset, and (iii) New Models of Apple Products during the time period between June 1, 2022 and May 31, 2024 (the “2022/23 Launch”), some of which use the SDX65 or SDX70 Qualcomm Chipsets (each a “Launch” and collectively the “Launches”).

The settlement between these two companies was completely hidden as these statements are over a year old.

Due to the 5nm process, the X60 modem comes with higher power efficiency as compared to the X55 modem. X60 was introduced in February 2020 and will be featuring smartphones in 2021.
