Qualcomm’s X55 supports both 5G mm-wave and 5G Sub-6Ghz networks, along with the 5G/4G spectrum sharing. It is Qualcomm’s second-generation 5G chip after X50.

Previous reports showed that Apple could use X55 modem in iPhone 12 models. This modem was the latest and the fastest at that time. Although the company also launched the X60 modem which was based on the 5nm process in February this year.

It was expected that the company could use an X60 modem in the iPhone 12 but the development process was already started and the chip came out too late.

This is the third generation 5G modem chip from Qualcomm and it is likely to be used in the 2021 iPhone models. This chip will be more power-efficient and will bring more improvement in the battery life, size, and connectivity of the devices.

The previous iPhone 11 came with Intel-based chips but this time Intel was not able to manufacture 5G modems. So Apple switched to Qualcomm’s 5G modem chips. Apple also cleared the legal battle with Qualcomm and we could see more devices from Apple to use Qualcomm’s chip technology.
