As per a new patent, Xiaomi is developing a mobile phone with a detachable rear camera. The image shows a rear camera module with multiple lenses, which can be removed from the and mounted on top to be used as a front camera.
Although the exact mechanism behind the design is not yet clear, according to the patent, it will include magnets, receivers, wireless network modules, etc.
As per the design of the patent, Xiaomi believes that this modular solution can eventually achieve full-screen performance without lag, and will not affect immersion. But this design can harm the waterproof and dustproof of the mobile phone.
Further, the image shows the circular camera module in the patent description. This means that camera modules of any size or shape can be retracted and fixed to other positions.
Unfortunately, it is not yet certain whether Xiaomi is actually planning to implement the design and launch a commercial phone, but for now, if it is implemented properly, the idea sounds very interesting.
In addition, Xiaomi previously applied for a patent for a truly innovative pop-up camera technology for its future flagship product. This pop-up camera design can be used to capture regular and selfie pictures/videos.
