Samsung and Xiaomi reportedly partnered to produce custom ARM Cortex-X2 and Mali GPU-based SoC

No doubt, Samsung and Xiaomi are the largest smartphone makers across the globe. Starting this year, Samsung launched its new flagship mobile processor – the Exynos 2100, built on the latest 5nm EUV manufacturing process. Compared to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888, the Galaxy S21 Series’s DOC has better performance and energy efficiency.

In addition, Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi recently announced its own image processor Surge C1. However, it appears that the company is in talks with South Korea’s technology giants to develop a customized SoC.

In addition, two OEMs have so far held five meetings to develop a chipset based on the Cortex-X2 core. However ARM hopes to launch the Cortex-X2 using the v9 architecture in the near future.

As per a new report, Xiaomi and Samsung are discussing to make a custom SoC. Apparently, they have held five meetings so far to develop the SoC based on the Cortex-X2 core. ARM has not released the Cortex-X2, though it is expected to be released in the next few months using the v9 architecture.

It is said that Qualcomm may use the Cortex-X2 in its next flagship SoC (perhaps Snapdragon 888+), and as a competitor, it is still a mystery to Samsung, what custom Xiaomi chips will provide. In addition, the report also indicated that Xiaomi hopes to continue using the ARM Mali GPU in combination with AMD and Samsung products.

Finally, it is notable that Xiaomi is not the first smartphone supplier to expect chip makers to use self-developed chipsets in their products instead of purchasing products. As stated earlier, Google’s upcoming Pixel 6 phones may be equipped with a custom SoC called “Whitechapel” , while Apple uses M1 and bionic chips in Macs and iPhones.
