Tesla will be first to adopt LG’s new NCMA lithium battery
Tesla will become the first manufacturer to use the new NCMA lithium battery produced by LG Energy Solution. In the past few years, Tesla has been self-developed or cooperated with other manufacturers to carry out battery innovation.
Since the cobalt element in current lithium batteries is very expensive, LG’s new NCMA lithium battery uses less cobalt than previous products and contains up to 90% nickel. In addition, it also contains manganese and aluminum.

GM previously stated that it would first use LG’s new NCMA battery in GMC Hummer electric vehicles in September this year, but the latest news shows that Tesla is expected to adopt it before GM. In addition, the new battery will be used in Tesla’s Model Y electric car at the Shanghai Super Factory.
LG Energy Solution has previously stated that it will more than double the production of lithium batteries in its Chinese factories to meet Tesla’s Model Y battery demand. In addition to LG’s new NCMA lithium battery, the company announced that it will also produce products with similar specifications to Tesla’s self-developed 4680 battery.
