HarmonyOS 2.0! Huawei’s newest innovation in the software segment or we can say the start of something new. Though the HarmonyOS (Hongmeng OS) was previously launched in 2019 for Huawei smart TVs, the company did massive work on the OS to bring it on more devices such as smartphones, tablets, and IoT devices.
At Huawei Developers Conference (HDC) 2020, the HarmonyOS 2.0 was introduced as Huawei’s self-developed operating system. The company also shared its plan to expand the reach of this new OS and make it work across different devices. The Chinese OEM is pretty high on hopes with HarmonyOS.
HarmonyOS for smartphones
At HDC 2020, Huawei Consumer Business Group CEO confirmed that the HarmonyOS will be available for smartphones as early as 2021. The company has planned to deliver this OS to smartphones and tablets in phases. Starting with the internal beta testing that began from December 2020, after that, the first phase of open beta comes from April 21, 2021, followed by the second phase from May 09, 2020.

As per the official roadmap, HarmonyOS will support devices with up to 128MB RAM that will make it run on smart wearables and other IoT devices. In 2021, the OS will gain support for up to 4GB RAM devices including smartphones and tablets. And by the end of 2021, the RAM support will increase over 4GB to support flagship phones.
As a usual software upgrade, the HarmonyOS too starts with the flagship devices including Huawei Mate 40, P40, Mate 30, and MatePad Pro tablets. It will then expand to the other mid-range and budget series phones and tablet which include Nova, Enjoy series, and other. Besides Huawei, some Honor devices will also be getting a HarmonyOS upgrade.
HarmonyOS Features
HarmonyOS is a completely new operating system and is not only limited to smartphones or tablets but the new OS is also coming several other gadgets as well which include smart wearables, IoT devices, in-car system, home appliances, and third party device.
The new operating system comes with a bunch of new capabilities so that users can get the best out of it. It packs several extraordinary features to count on along with other basic functions that are common in all.
Compared to the previous EMUI, the new HarmonyOS comes with features such as a new Home Screen, Service Widgets, Control Panel, Smart Folder, HarmonyOS Fonts, and more. The Super device function is another innovation that allows users to control other devices with one super device.
The new Huawei Share allows users to bring a capability to transfer files on a cross-device platform without requiring a data cable. The Smart Home functionality offers intelligent operation on household appliances, such as quickly accessing the phone’s network from the connected devices.
Furthermore, it also provides smooth and seamless performance, such as the new Task Center allows you to switch between devices on their own without installing them on each and every one.
