A slimmer iPhone 17 might evolve into an ‘iPhone Air’—Here’s Why It Makes Sense

Top 3 Key Points:

  1. Rumored Shift: A slimmer iPhone 17 may become a mid-tier ‘iPhone Air’ instead of a high-end ‘iPhone Slim.’
  2. Strategic Positioning: The ‘iPhone Air’ could bridge the gap between standard and Pro models, offering a balance of design and performance.
  3. Market Appeal: This new model might appeal to users who want a stylish design without the high cost of Pro models.

A Slimmer iPhone 17—From “Ultra High-End” to “iPhone Air”?

Recent rumors have suggested that Apple is working on a new version of the iPhone 17 with a thinner, more elegant design. Initially, this model was dubbed the “iPhone Slim,” leading many to believe it would be an ultra-high-end device, possibly more expensive than the current Pro Max models. However, industry expert Mark Gurman from Bloomberg has recently indicated that this new iPhone might be more akin to an “iPhone Air”—a mid-range option rather than a luxury model. This new perspective changes how we might view Apple’s plans for the iPhone lineup.

The Evolution of Rumors: iPhone Slim or iPhone Air?

The first hints about this slimmer iPhone came from DSCC analyst Ross Young, who noted that Apple was looking to replace the iPhone Plus with a model featuring a slightly smaller 6.5-inch screen, compared to the current 6.7-inch display. Later reports from The Information mentioned that Apple was indeed working on an “iPhone Slim,” a device that would be noticeably thinner and possibly more expensive than the iPhone Pro Max, which starts at $1,199.

However, confusion arose when it was suggested that the iPhone Slim wouldn’t have a display as large as the Pro Max and might feature only a single 48-megapixel camera instead of the multiple cameras seen on higher-end models. While Apple has previously sold products that prioritize design over specs—like the 12-inch MacBook—it didn’t seem logical for them to pursue the same strategy with a high-priced iPhone.

Why an iPhone Air Makes More Sense

Gurman’s latest report offers a different angle. Instead of an ultra-premium iPhone Slim, Apple might introduce this slimmer model as an “iPhone Air,” positioned between the standard iPhone 17 and the iPhone 17 Pro. The concept is similar to how Apple introduced the MacBook Air—offering a more stylish option between the regular MacBook and the higher-performance MacBook Pro.

This “iPhone Air” could cater to users who want a more visually appealing phone than the base model without needing the advanced features and higher costs of a Pro model. As Gurman pointed out, Apple has been trying to develop a successful mid-tier iPhone for some time, but previous attempts like the iPhone 12 mini and the iPhone 15 Plus didn’t perform as expected. A stylish “iPhone Air” could be the solution, especially if the Pro models continue to rise in price.

Apple is reportedly aiming to pack as much performance as possible into this new, slimmer design, potentially making it comparable to the Pro models in future versions. This approach mirrors the iPad lineup, where the iPad Air shares many features with the iPad Pro.

What This Means for the iPhone Lineup

If these rumors are accurate, the iPhone lineup could look something like this:

  • iPhone 17: The standard model with a traditional design.
  • iPhone 17 Air: A new model with a larger display and more appealing design, offering a middle ground between the base and Pro versions.
  • iPhone 17 Pro & Pro Max: Top-tier models with advanced hardware and robust designs.

An “iPhone Air” might make more sense for Apple than an ultra-premium “iPhone Slim,” especially if the goal is to attract more customers who value design but don’t need the full power of a Pro model. What do you think about this potential new direction for the iPhone?
