Android 14 is likely to add in-app Predictive Back feature

Android 14 upgrade will hand over a massive list of fascinating elements to devices, and a new addition to this list could be an in-app Predictive Back feature. As the name reflects, the tech giant is trying to implement this ability in almost every application on your handset.

The Predictive Back feature is not a new term to the ears. To be specific, the respective tool lets you preview the destination or other result of a back gesture before fully completing it. This also allows you to choose whether to continue or stay in the current view.

In other words, it shows a preview of the home screen as you swipe away from the phone’s edge. Thereafter, it shrinks the app that you are currently working on. This back-to-home gesture helps to reduce the instances where users accidentally leave an app.

Following consumers’ demand, the Android maker is planning to bring out an in-app Predictive Back feature with the Android 14 operating system. So far, we heard several rumors on this aspect. But during the I/O 2023 event, Google initiated this plan on how app developers including Chrome might adopt this capability in the next upgrade.

You can test this element in Android 13 by navigating to System app > System > and then tapping on the Developer options. Here, you will find the Predictive back animations. With Android 14, Google could set this feature as a default option for users.

Eventually, this action will allow users to preview what screen they are returning to while managing an app. In the second beta of the new OS, the feature is optional. However, the company is testing it on Chrome and other apps.

Further, the manufacturer has laid some interesting notes that will aid developers to adopt this useful feature. For instance, they can opt the predictive back gesture per activity rather than the whole application. On the flip side, we may also find changes in components like Side Sheets, Search, navigation rail, and Bottom Sheets.
