Stable Android 14 is still behind the curtain and we are hearing some new inputs for the forthcoming OS. According to the details, Google is working on a significant capability that will enable third-party apps to read the battery health data in Android 15.
Up to this point, Google has only served this facility to system apps that require specific permission via the ADB developers tool. However, the company is likely to reshape this concept with Android 15 allowing third-party apps to access battery health status and data.
As spotted by @MishaalRahman, Android 14 has introduced the API for reading battery health details. But it remains to system apps not due to privacy but engineering reasons since there were no major requirements to use this permission.
It is worth mentioning that even if Android 15 opens this feature as a public API, it won’t be available to all of the devices. Perhaps, the device’s battery charging IC might have to be set to report the particular data to Android’s Health HAL, which in return is read by the OS and other apps.
Things are still under the hood and there is a lot of time to see this new implementation. Let’s see what else the tech giant will try to adopt in the next OS to enhance the battery performance and user experience for devices.
