Apple confirms iPhone 16 models feature 8GB of RAM for enhanced performance

Top 3 Key Points:

  1. All iPhone 16 models now include 8GB of RAM, from base to Pro Max.
  2. The extra memory supports Apple’s AI-driven features and boosts gaming performance.
  3. iOS 18 will bring Apple Intelligence to iPhone 16 models, excluding iPhone 15 with 6GB of RAM.

Apple has confirmed that the iPhone 16 lineup, including the standard and Pro Max versions, will have 8GB of RAM. This move is driven by the need to support Apple’s advanced AI features. Johny Srouji, Apple’s VP of hardware technology, shared the details in a recent interview with Geekerwan, which was later highlighted by 9to5Mac.

Srouji pointed out that increasing RAM to 8GB was necessary due to the growing demands of Apple Intelligence. According to him, “DRAM is one part of the equation” when determining what hardware is needed for such features, and the decision to upgrade the RAM would also enhance high-performance tasks, such as gaming, on the new iPhones.

Although Apple didn’t initially disclose the RAM specifics during the iPhone 16 launch, tech enthusiasts at MacRumors found references to the 8GB figure in Xcode following the event. This aligns with the company’s aim to ensure their hardware can keep up with AI advancements. However, it’s important to note that the iPhone 15, which has 6GB of RAM, will not support Apple Intelligence when iOS 18 rolls out. Only the iPhone 16 and iPhone 15 Pro will be compatible with this new feature.

In his 17-minute interview, Srouji also discussed Apple’s philosophy on hardware performance, the capabilities of the A18 chip in the iPhone 16 series, and the company’s approach to improving thermal design and video processing.

This upgrade to 8GB of RAM is another step in Apple’s ongoing commitment to delivering faster, more powerful devices that support the latest in AI technology and performance-intensive applications.
