Apple has introduced its Tap to Pay feature on iPhone in five additional European countries: Austria, the Czech Republic, Ireland, Romania, and Sweden. This expansion enables businesses in these countries—ranging from independent sellers to larger merchants—to transform their iPhones into secure, contactless payment terminals, eliminating the need for extra hardware.
How Tap to Pay on iPhone Works
Initially launched in the United States in February 2022, Tap to Pay on iPhone lets users accept payments directly via Apple Pay, contactless credit and debit cards, and other compatible digital wallets. Transactions are encrypted, ensuring user privacy and data security; Apple neither stores details about purchases nor captures information about the buyer.
Using Tap to Pay on iPhone is straightforward. Business owners simply open their preferred payment app, enter the sale amount, and present the iPhone to the customer. Customers can then tap their payment method—be it Apple Pay or a contactless card—to complete the transaction. Since it uses Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, transactions are processed securely and can also accommodate PIN entry with accessibility features.
Supported Platforms and Payment Partners
Starting immediately, Tap to Pay on iPhone is available through the following payment platforms across all five new countries:
- Adyen
- SumUp
- Viva.com
Additional payment partners are region-specific. Here’s a breakdown:
- Austria, Czech Republic, and Romania: Global Payments in collaboration with Erste Bank
- Austria and Sweden: Nexi
- Austria and Ireland: Revolut
- Austria only: myPOS and PAYONE
- Sweden only: Zettle by PayPal
In the upcoming weeks, more platforms will enable Tap to Pay on iPhone for their customers, including Hobex in Austria, BOI Payment Acceptance and Global Payments in Ireland, Square in Ireland, and Surfboard Payments in Sweden.
Supported Payment Methods and Devices
Tap to Pay on iPhone supports a wide range of contactless cards from major networks like American Express, Discover, Mastercard, and Visa. It is compatible with iPhone XS models and newer. For customers, the payment experience is seamless and feels like any other Apple Pay transaction, requiring just a tap to complete.
Expanding Accessibility for Small and Large Businesses
The Tap to Pay expansion brings Apple’s contactless technology to a total of 17 countries worldwide, which now includes the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Japan, Austria, the Czech Republic, Ireland, Romania, the Netherlands, Sweden, Brazil, Italy, France, Taiwan, Ukraine, and Germany. This rollout is part of Apple’s ongoing effort to offer secure, contactless payment solutions that empower businesses with efficient, flexible options for customer payments.
With Apple’s continued support of secure, contactless transactions, businesses of all sizes are increasingly equipped to meet customer demands for easy, digital payment solutions—without the complexity of additional payment hardware.
