Apple iPadOS 16 code has internal mode to enable Stage Manager on older iPads

Posted on

One of the main functions of iPad OS 16 is Stage Manager, which can be used for the first time on the iPad to view overlapping windows of different sizes through a single view, bringing a new multitasking experience.

But this feature is only available for the M1 iPad, which has caused dissatisfaction among many users. However, the code appears to enable pre-stage scheduling on older iPads. Looking at the iPadOS 16 code, the sources found that Apple has an internal mode that enables pre-stage scheduling on older iPads.

The code mentions an internal setting that enables “Chamois” (the codename for front-of-stage scheduling) for “legacy devices”. In other words, this mode makes pre-stage scheduling available to all other non-M1 iPads running iPadOS 16.

It also corroborates previous claims made by Apple’s head of software engineering, Craig Federighi, in an interview that he said Apple was working on the M1 chip on more iPad models before deciding that the feature required it. I tried it, but the experience was not ideal.

Of course, that doesn’t mean that pre-stage scheduling works smoothly on older iPads, but hiding the option in the first developer beta of iPadOS 16 suggests that the company’s engineers may still be working on some other iPad models A test of this function.

It’s unclear if Apple will change the hardware requirements for pre-stage scheduling in iPadOS 16. Live Text (real-time subtitles) was an exclusive feature of M1 Macs when macOS Monterey was released last year. However, after strong user dissatisfaction, Apple made the feature available to Intel Macs as well.
