Washington State Senator Karen Kaiser and Representative Liz Berry are drafting the bill. In October of this year, former Apple employee Cher Scarlett contacted Kaiser to try to get everyone to pay attention to the issue. Former Google employee Chelsea Gleason also sued for pregnancy discrimination, and she also contacted lawmakers. Inspired by the two women, Caesar got the idea to draft the bill.
Berry said in the statement: “Just because you’ve signed a non-disclosure agreement, you can’t talk deeply about the harassment or discrimination you faced in the office. Shouldn’t stay.”Confidentiality agreements are very common in the tech sector. Some employees have sued the tech giant, claiming they used non-disclosure agreements to circumvent legal protections, such as barring employees from discussing working conditions.
