Three vulnerabilities were found in older macOS versions, and Apple pushed security patches for those users who were unable or unwilling to update to macOS 13 Ventura. The macOS Monterey 12.6.1 and macOS Big Sur 11.7.1 updates resolve issues with the AppleMobileFileIntegrity, Ruby, and Sandbox systems.
The notes on Apple’s security update page describe the patched vulnerability as follows.
-
AppleMobileFileIntegrity affects applications that may modify protected parts of the file system, an issue that has been addressed by removing the extra permissions CVE-2022-42825.
-
Ruby affecting remote users can lead to unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution. Memory corruption has been resolved by updating Ruby to version 2.6.10 CVE-2022-28739.
-
The Sandbox affects applications with root permissions that may be able to access private information, an issue that has been addressed through improved data protection CVE-2022-32862.
Moreover, a calendar fix has also been made in the macOS Monterey security notes. An anonymous researcher assisted with an unknown bug that was not addressed in the major fix.
Anyone with a Mac that can’t update to macOS 13 Ventura and is able to run macOS Big Sur or macOS Monterey will get these updates. They are installed automatically, or the user can update manually through System Preferences.
