Apple Watch Ultra 3 to feature Satellite texting and Beats Pill gets firmware update

Posted on

Apple’s upcoming Apple Watch Ultra 3, expected in September 2025, is set to support satellite texting. This technology, introduced with the iPhone 14, enables users to send messages via satellite when Wi-Fi or cellular networks are unavailable. Initially limited to emergency texts, the feature now supports regular texting, offering enhanced communication for off-grid situations.

The Apple Watch Ultra caters to outdoor adventurers, including hikers and divers, making satellite connectivity a vital safety upgrade. Apple aims to compete with brands like Garmin, which specialize in satellite-enabled devices for outdoor activities.

Currently, Apple provides two years of free satellite connectivity for iPhones, and a similar model is likely for the new Apple Watch Ultra. Pricing for the feature beyond the free period has not yet been announced.

Moving to MediaTek for Cellular Connectivity

Apple also plans to replace Intel cellular modems in future Apple Watch models with MediaTek’s modem chips. This shift will introduce 5G Recap, a lower-power 5G service tailored for wearables. Despite 5G being available in iPhones for years, current Apple Watch models still rely on 4G LTE.

Beats Pill Firmware Update

Apple has rolled out its first firmware update for the Beats Pill, its $150 portable speaker launched in June 2024. The update, moving the firmware version to 2.2, is installed automatically when the speaker is charging and within Bluetooth range of a connected device. On Android devices, users must download the Beats app for updates.

The Beats Pill includes features like:

  • USB-C and Bluetooth support
  • IP67 water resistance
  • 24-hour battery life
  • Compatibility with Find My for Apple and Android devices

While Apple hasn’t detailed the update’s improvements, the speaker’s design and advanced functionality make it a strong contender in the portable speaker market.

These updates underline Apple’s commitment to innovation, enhancing connectivity and functionality across its product lineup.
