Apple’s Foldable iPhone reportedly coming in 2026 to rival Samsung Galaxy Z Flip
Apple has been quietly working on foldable devices for years, and now reports suggest the first foldable iPhone could finally arrive in 2026. If launched that year, it will compete with Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 7 or Flip 8.
Foldable iPhone: Bigger Screen and Inward Folding Design
According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, Apple’s foldable iPhone will feature an inward-folding screen similar to Samsung’s Galaxy Z series. The display is expected to be at least 7 inches diagonally, making it larger than the upcoming 6.9-inch iPhone 16 Pro Max and Samsung’s current 6.7-inch Galaxy Z Flip.
Initially, Apple explored outward-folding screens, like Huawei’s foldables, but it decided to go with the inward-folding design after facing hinge and screen durability challenges. With these issues largely resolved, Apple is targeting a 2026 launch. However, the company may delay it further to ensure a flawless product, as it often does.
iPhone 17 Air: Thinner Design, Simplified Features
In addition to foldable phones, Apple is reportedly planning “major design changes” for its standard iPhone lineup. One key release could be the iPhone 17 Air—an ultra-thin iPhone expected to launch in September 2025. The device is rumored to be thinner than any previous iPhone, possibly between 5mm and 6.25mm, beating the 6.9mm record of the iPhone 6.
To achieve its slim design, the iPhone 17 Air will reportedly “simplify” some features found in the Pro models, such as a less advanced camera system. As a result, it will likely be priced lower than the Pro lineup, which starts at $999 in the U.S.
Apple’s 19-Inch Foldable MacBook and Future Devices
Beyond smartphones, Apple is also developing other foldable products. One major project includes a 19-inch foldable MacBook that unfolds into a large display, potentially merging laptop and tablet functions. While the foldable MacBook was initially set to launch first, Apple now appears focused on releasing the foldable iPhone first.
The 19-inch MacBook and foldable iPhone will launch in 2026 or 2027. However, as with all Apple products, the company is trying to perfect the design and overcome challenges, especially with the foldable hinge and protective screen layers.
